Defensin alpha 10, pseudogene (DEFA10P) is a non-functional member of the alpha-defensin gene family found in primates. Alpha-defensins are endogenous cationic peptides involved in broad-spectrum antimicrobial defense, but DEFA10P contains sequence defects or truncations that abolish its protein-coding potential. DEFA10P shares sequence similarity with other α-defensins and is informative in studies of primate gene evolution, particularly alpha- and theta-defensin clusters, but does not contribute a functional protein to human physiology. It does not serve as a therapeutic target, nor is it implicated as a disease gene, biomarker, or drug-interaction partner.
