Defensin alpha 11, pseudogene (DEFA11P) is one of several pseudogenes in the human alpha-defensin locus. Unlike protein-coding alpha-defensin genes, which produce antimicrobial peptides involved in innate immunity, this locus contains mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons and does not produce a functional defensin peptide in humans[2][3]. Alpha-defensins themselves are cationic peptides critical to host defense, but pseudogenes like DEFA11P are considered evolutionary remnants with no established protein product or biological role[1][2][3]. As a pseudogene, DEFA11P does not encode an active molecule and is not targeted by existing drugs, nor is it used as a disease biomarker or considered in clinical safety assessments.
