Dendritic cells (DCs) are bone marrow-derived leukocytes and are considered the most efficient professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the immune system. Their primary function is to process and present antigens on their surface to T cells, thereby acting as messengers between the innate and adaptive immune systems. DCs play a central role in initiating adaptive immune responses, determining tolerance, and regulating immunity against pathogens, tumors, and self-antigens.
Dendritic cells are targeted to enhance antigen presentation and T cell activation for cancer immunotherapy, or to induce tolerance in autoimmune diseases.
