Overview

Mature dendritic cells are immune cells that act as highly efficient antigen-presenting cells (APCs), responsible for processing and presenting antigen fragments on their surface to T lymphocytes via MHC molecules, thereby initiating and regulating adaptive immune responses. Their maturation involves upregulation of co-stimulatory molecules (CD80, CD86, CD83), migration to lymphoid organs, and secretion of cytokines that guide T cell activation and differentiation. This function is central both to promoting immunity against pathogens and tumors and in maintaining tolerance to self-antigens. In clinical settings, mature dendritic cells are targeted in vaccine design and immunotherapy, highlighting their significance as both effectors and modulators in immunological disease contexts.
