Dendritic cells (DCs) present lipid antigens to iNKT cells via the CD1d molecule. This pathway bridges innate and adaptive immunity. CD1d is a non-polymorphic MHC class I-like molecule expressed on DCs and other cell types. DCs acquire glycolipid/lipid antigens, load them onto CD1d in lysosomes, and present the complex to iNKT cells. Activation of iNKT cells leads to cytokine secretion and modulation of downstream immune responses. This pathway is relevant to tumor immunity, infection, and autoimmunity.
