The dengue viruses are single-stranded, positive-sense RNA viruses belonging to the genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae. There are four closely related but antigenically distinct serotypes, termed Dengue virus serotype 1 through 4 (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4). Each serotype is capable of causing disease ranging from mild dengue fever to severe forms such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. The genome encodes three structural proteins (capsid, membrane, and envelope) and seven nonstructural proteins. Dengue viruses are primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti. Immunity to one serotype does not confer long-term protection against the others and, in fact, subsequent infection with a different serotype increases the risk of severe disease due to antibody-dependent enhancement[1][2][3][4][5][6]. Dengue remains a significant global public health concern, with vaccines under development and varying efficacy against the four serotypes.
