The dermal-epidermal junction is a specialized anatomical interface between the epidermis and dermis composed of multiple interacting structural proteins that form the basement membrane zone[1][3]. The DEJ serves critical functions in skin homeostasis including epidermal-dermal adherence, mechanical support, regulation of the cellular microenvironment, and acting as a barrier to molecular exchange[1][3]. The structure exhibits a characteristic corrugated topography with rete ridges and dermal papillae that enhance mechanical resistance and nutrient exchange between the vascularized dermis and avascular epidermis[3]. While individual proteins within the DEJ (such as collagen VII and collagen IV) may be targeted in therapeutic approaches, the DEJ itself is an organizational structure rather than a single molecular target[7][8].
