Overview

Dietary phosphorus refers to the inorganic phosphate present in food, which is absorbed primarily in the small intestine. Intestinal absorption is a critical process for maintaining systemic phosphate homeostasis, supporting bone mineralization and cellular energy metabolism. Absorption occurs via transcellular (NaPi-2b mediated, active, saturable, regulated by calcitriol) and paracellular (passive, non-saturable) pathways. While not directly a drug target, dietary phosphorus intake is a critical factor in managing phosphate levels, especially in chronic kidney disease.
