Overview

Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis Antigens represent a complex of bacterial components used in vaccines to induce active immunity against three major infectious diseases. The diphtheria and tetanus components are typically toxoids—bacterial toxins rendered harmless through chemical treatment but remaining highly immunogenic—derived from Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Clostridium tetani, respectively (StatPearls, 2023). The pertussis component consists of either inactivated whole Bordetella pertussis cells or specific acellular subunits such as pertussis toxin, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin (CDC, 2022). Unlike traditional pharmacological targets like receptors or enzymes, these antigens do not interact with a single molecular site but are instead processed by antigen-presenting cells to activate the host's adaptive immune system. This interaction triggers the production of neutralizing IgG antibodies and the establishment of long-term immunological memory, providing prophylaxis rather than treating an active infection. These antigens are the primary active ingredients in DTaP and Tdap vaccines, which are essential for preventing respiratory distress, muscle spasms, and severe coughing fits associated with these pathogens (WHO, 2018).
