Diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, acellular pertussis antigens, recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen, inactivated poliovirus types 1-3 is a multi-component combination vaccine formulation, most commonly known by the brand name Pediarix, used for active immunization in pediatric populations (FDA, 2023). The formulation consists of inactivated bacterial toxins (toxoids) from Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Clostridium tetani, purified antigens from Bordetella pertussis, recombinant Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and inactivated whole Poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 (CDC, 2021). Its primary biological function is to stimulate the host's immune system to recognize these specific pathogens and produce protective antibodies, thereby establishing long-term immunological memory (DrugBank, 2024). This vaccine is indicated for the prevention of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, and poliomyelitis, typically administered as a three-dose primary series in infants (StatPearls, 2023). By combining these five components into a single injection, the formulation reduces the total number of injections required during early childhood, which improves vaccination compliance and reduces healthcare burden (PubMed, PMID: 12508761).
