Overview

DNA polymerase epsilon 3, accessory subunit (POLE3) is a histone-fold protein that forms part of the DNA polymerase epsilon complex, an essential enzyme for chromosomal DNA replication and repair. POLE3 interacts with other histone-fold proteins to bind DNA in a sequence-independent manner and aids in the incorporation of naked DNA into chromatin, a process assisted by nucleosome-remodeling factors. POLE3’s accessory function is required for proper DNA repair, genome stability, and regulated chromatin packaging during cell division and transcription, and it forms a structural scaffold within the larger DNA polymerase epsilon holoenzyme.
