Overview

EGF-like and EMI domain-containing 1, pseudogene (EGFEM1P) is a genetically defined pseudogene located on chromosome 3. Pseudogenes are genomic loci that resemble functional protein-coding genes but are considered non-functional due to mutations that disrupt their coding capacity[1][3][4]. EGFEM1P is predicted but not confirmed to have scavenger receptor activity and a possible role in vesicle-mediated transport, though these annotations are computational and lack experimental validation[1][4]. It does not encode a functional protein and is not currently recognized as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or relevant for drug development. Like other pseudogenes, if transcribed, it could theoretically compete for microRNA binding and thus indirectly regulate its parent gene or related pathways—a mechanism described for other pseudogenes such as PTENP1 in cancer, but not proven for EGFEM1P[5]. Current evidence does not support a clinical or biological function beyond basic genomic annotation.
