Electrolyte balance refers to the regulation and maintenance of optimal concentrations of key ions—sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺), and magnesium (Mg²⁺)—in body fluids. These electrolytes are essential for numerous physiological processes including nerve conduction, muscle contraction, fluid balance, acid-base homeostasis, and enzymatic activity. Electrolyte concentrations are tightly regulated by renal excretion/reabsorption, hormonal control (aldosterone, parathyroid hormone/vitamin D/calcitonin), and gastrointestinal absorption. Disruptions can result from kidney dysfunctions, hormonal imbalances or excessive intake/losses via diet/sweat/vomiting/diarrhea. Imbalances can cause a wide range of symptoms, from confusion and seizures to muscle weakness, arrhythmias, and tetany. Chronic deficiencies/excesses may affect multiple organ systems over time.
