The mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) is a series of protein complexes and small molecules embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Its primary function is to transfer electrons from electron donors such as NADH and FADH₂ to molecular oxygen, which acts as the final electron acceptor. This process generates a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which drives ATP synthesis via chemiosmosis—a process known as oxidative phosphorylation.
