Overview
Endothelial cells (ECs) are specialized cells that form a continuous monolayer lining the interior of blood vessels. In allogeneic settings, recipient endothelial cells are exposed to donor immune cells, leading to endothelial activation, immune-mediated injury, and complications such as GVHD, VOD/SOS, and microangiopathy. They regulate vascular tone, permeability, coagulation, inflammation, and immune cell trafficking. Allogeneic ECs are a target in transplant rejection and GVHD.
