Overview

Energy meridians, as described in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), are **theoretical pathways or channels through which the body's vital energy, known as "qi"**, is believed to flow[1][2][3][4][5][6]. These channels are not anatomical structures and have no basis in modern molecular biology or physiology[7]. The concept of energy meridians underpins practices such as acupuncture and acupressure, where stimulation of specific points along these pathways is thought to restore balance and promote health by unblocking or redirecting qi flow[1][2][3][4]. There are traditionally twelve main organ-associated meridians and several additional channels, including the Governing and Conception vessels. Each is associated with particular organs or physiological functions according to TCM theory. Disruption of qi flow along these meridians is believed to result in disease or dysfunction; restoring proper flow is a central goal of acupuncture therapy[1][2]. Despite their importance in TCM practice, **energy meridians lack scientific validation**—no anatomical structure corresponding to them has been identified, and they are considered pseudoscientific by mainstream biomedical science[7]. Some studies have explored possible correlations with electrical conductivity at certain skin points but results remain inconclusive[1][2]. As such, energy meridians do not fit recognized categories like receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc., nor do they serve as direct therapeutic targets for drugs. In summary: "Energy meridian" refers to a theoretical construct from traditional Chinese medicine rather than a defined molecular target. It should not be classified alongside scientifically validated biological molecules used in drug discovery or clinical biomarker research.
