Enoyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] reductase I (FabI)

Target
FabI
Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

FabI is the primary enoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) reductase enzyme in the type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS II) pathway, essential for bacterial and plant fatty acid biosynthesis. It catalyzes the NADH- or NADPH-dependent reduction of a carbon-carbon double bond in an enoyl moiety that is covalently linked to ACP, converting trans-2-enoyl-ACP substrates to acyl-ACP. FabI has been validated as an effective antibacterial drug target; inhibiting this enzyme leads to significant reductions in bacterial viability both extracellularly and intracellularly.
