Overview

Enoyl-CoA hydratase domain-containing protein 2, mitochondrial (ECHDC2) is a mitochondrial enzyme primarily involved in fatty acid and branched-chain amino acid metabolism[2][3]. It regulates cell proliferation, apoptosis, and energy production by modulating the degradation of substrates such as MCCC2 via interaction with the ubiquitin ligase NEDD4. ECHDC2 is expressed in metabolically active tissues, such as heart, liver, and kidney, and is implicated in disease states including cancer (notably gastric cancer, where it acts as a potential tumor suppressor by inhibiting glycolysis/proliferation[1]) and cardiovascular disease (where increased ECHDC2 may exacerbate myocardial injury, partly by regulating branched-chain amino acid metabolism[2]). The protein is 292 amino acids in length (human), encoded by the ECHDC2 gene, and is considered a potential, but as yet untargeted, therapeutic enzyme in metabolic regulation and disease[1][2][3].
