Enteric nerve endings in the colon are the terminal regions of neurons belonging to the enteric nervous system, a complex network controlling local and reflexive gut functions such as motility, secretion, absorption, blood flow, and coordination with the immune system. These nerve endings release various neurotransmitters (acetylcholine, nitric oxide, vasoactive intestinal peptide, substance P, etc.), integrate signals from both intrinsic ENS circuits and extrinsic autonomic fibers, and are critical for the normal physiological regulation of the colon. These structures are not single molecular targets, but rather anatomical endpoints of diverse neuronal populations
