EDDM3CP, also referred to as HE3-gamma, is a **processed pseudogene** found in the human genome as a homolog related to the HE3 gene family, which was originally identified through screening of the human epididymis. While related members of this gene family (HE3 alpha and HE3 beta) are transcribed and expressed as small secretory proteins specifically in the human epididymis, the **HE3-gamma (EDDM3CP) gene is a pseudogene and is not transcribed or expressed as a protein**[1]. Genomic studies confirm it retains high sequence similarity to its functional homologs but lacks functional capacity due to disabling mutations. Pseudogenes like EDDM3CP arise commonly in eukaryotic genomes either by gene duplication followed by mutation (non-processed), or by reverse transcription and insertion of mRNA back into the genome (processed), which then accumulates mutations and becomes non-functional[4]. EDDM3CP falls into the latter category, as a processed pseudogene. It is not considered a therapeutic target or receptor, nor is it implicated in any known disease mechanism or therapeutic intervention. There are no known drugs, mechanisms, or biomarker roles for EDDM3CP, nor are there notable safety concerns described with respect to this locus in clinical therapeutics.
