The extracellular matrix (ECM) of the dermis is a sophisticated structural network composed primarily of Type I and Type III collagen fibers, elastin, and a ground substance of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans (Frantz et al., 2010, Journal of Cell Science). This network provides the skin with essential mechanical properties, including tensile strength, resilience, and elasticity, while also acting as a reservoir for growth factors and a scaffold for cell-matrix interactions (StatPearls, 2023). In clinical practice, the dermal collagen network is a major therapeutic target for addressing skin aging, wound healing, and various fibrotic conditions (Varani et al., 2006, American Journal of Pathology). Pharmacological interventions, such as topical retinoids, aim to enhance collagen density by stimulating fibroblast activity and suppressing the expression of collagen-degrading matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In contrast, therapeutic enzymes like collagenase are utilized to break down excessive or pathological collagen deposits in conditions such as Dupuytren's contracture (FDA, 2010). The integrity and organization of this network are critical biomarkers for skin health and are frequently monitored in dermatological research and cosmetic development.
