Family with sequence similarity 21 member E, pseudogene (FAM21EP, also FLJ31813), is a pseudogene and thus is classified as a non-protein-coding genomic element. Pseudogenes are generally considered to be nonfunctional remnants of protein-coding genes that have lost their protein-coding ability due to accumulated mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons[1][5]. Unlike typical therapeutic targets such as receptors, enzymes, or transporters, pseudogenes do not encode functional proteins and are not themselves targeted by drugs. However, recent research indicates that some pseudogenes may have regulatory roles at the RNA level—for example, producing noncoding RNAs that can regulate expression of their parental genes or act as microRNA decoys[3][5]. Despite these potential functions, there is no evidence that FAM21EP specifically encodes a functional protein, participates in well-defined biological pathways, or serves as a pharmacological target. There are no known drugs, biomarkers, or disease associations specific to this pseudogene.
