The Family with sequence similarity 27, member E pseudogene (FAM27E pseudogene; ENSG00000264245) is a DNA segment that closely resembles the protein-coding FAM27E gene but, due to accumulated mutations, it cannot produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes like this often arise from gene duplication, retrotransposition, or mutation events and may retain sequence similarity to their parent gene, but lack coding potential because of disruptions in regulatory or coding regions. Although most pseudogenes are nonfunctional, some can play roles in gene expression regulation, such as acting as decoys for microRNAs or participating in RNA interference pathways. There is no evidence that the FAM27E pseudogene has a functional biological or disease-related role, nor is it a receptor, enzyme, or described therapeutic target.
