Overview

Fc receptors on antigen-presenting cells are transmembrane proteins of the immunoglobulin superfamily that bind the Fc region of antibodies (primarily IgG subclasses). These receptors transduce signals that regulate numerous immune functions, including phagocytosis, ADCC, antigen presentation, and cytokine secretion[4][1][6]. Their specific activities depend on the type of Fc receptor and cell type, with both activating (e.g., FcγRI, FcγRIIA, FcγRIIIA) and inhibitory (e.g., FcγRIIB) subtypes present[4][8]. Variation in Fc receptor genes alters efficiency of immune complex clearance and susceptibility to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases[4][5]. Fc receptor engagement is exploited therapeutically by monoclonal antibodies used in cancer and autoimmune diseases, linking antibody specificity with immune effector functions[2][8].
