Ferredoxin-2, mitochondrial (FDX2) is a small iron-sulfur protein located in the mitochondrial matrix that serves as an indispensable electron donor to the iron-sulfur cluster (ISC) assembly machinery, supporting de novo Fe/S cluster biosynthesis essential for the maturation of numerous mitochondrial and cellular Fe/S proteins[1][2][5]. Structurally, it is a [2Fe-2S] protein that binds and donates electrons specifically for Fe/S protein biogenesis and heme A synthesis, but does not participate in steroidogenesis (unlike FDX1)[1][5]. Genetic defects in FDX2 can lead to mitochondrial disease including myopathies and neuropathies due to the failure of essential mitochondrial functions[1]. FDX2 is not generally considered a drug target but is a component essential for core mitochondrial metabolism[1][4].
