Overview

Ferritin heavy chain like 18, pseudogene (FTHL18P) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome and part of the ferritin multigene family, which consists of the primary ferritin heavy chain gene (FTH1), several related protein-coding genes, and over 40 pseudogenes[3][4][6]. Pseudogenes such as FTHL18P do not encode a functional protein due to disruptions in their coding sequence and generally lack significant biological function; however, some ferritin pseudogenes have been described to exert gene regulatory activity by acting as competing endogenous RNAs that modulate the expression of their parental gene (FTH1) via microRNA binding[6][7]. There is currently no evidence that FTHL18P itself is expressed as RNA or exerts any such regulatory function, in contrast to a few other ferritin heavy chain pseudogenes[3][4][6]. FTHL18P is not a therapeutic drug target or biomarker, is not linked to any known disease, and has no known protein or physiological activity in humans[3][4][6].

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

None (pseudogene; no evidence for protein-coding function, nor well-established regulatory function specific to FTHL18P[3][4])
04

Disease associations

Other (no reported disease association specific to FTHL18P; ferritin family pseudogenes more broadly may play regulatory roles in some cancers by acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), but FTHL18P itself is not specifically implicated[3][6][7])
