Overview

Gonadotropins are a group of peptide/glycoprotein hormones (FSH, LH, hCG) secreted primarily by the anterior pituitary gland (FSH and LH) and the placenta (hCG). They regulate the function of the gonads (ovaries and testes), playing crucial roles in sexual development, reproduction, and the maintenance of early pregnancy. They exert their effects by binding to G-protein coupled receptors on gonadal cells, triggering downstream signaling pathways that influence steroid hormone synthesis and gametogenesis. Abnormal gonadotropin levels can indicate various reproductive disorders.
