Follicle-stimulating hormone receptor messenger RNA (FSHR mRNA) is the nucleic acid transcript responsible for the synthesis of the FSHR protein, a G protein-coupled receptor essential for mammalian reproductive function (NCBI Gene ID: 2492). In females, it is primarily expressed in ovarian granulosa cells, where it facilitates follicle maturation and estrogen production; in males, it is expressed in Sertoli cells to support spermatogenesis (UniProt: P23945). Targeting the mRNA transcript via RNA interference (RNAi) or antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) represents a therapeutic strategy to silence FSHR expression, which is particularly relevant in treating FSHR-overexpressing malignancies like ovarian cancer or managing conditions like endometriosis (PMID: 17063136, PMID: 25600153). Beyond reproduction, FSHR mRNA expression has been detected in extragonadal tissues, suggesting its potential involvement in bone health and metabolic regulation, though these roles remain areas of active investigation (PMID: 31164557). Additionally, the detection of FSHR mRNA in circulating tumor cells is being explored as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in various hormone-dependent cancers.
