Overview

Free iron ions, often referred to as the labile iron pool (LIP), represent the chemically active, non-protein-bound fraction of iron within cells and plasma (Source: PubMed, PMC3063462). While iron is essential for numerous biological processes, including oxygen transport and DNA synthesis, free or loosely bound iron is highly reactive and can catalyze the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via the Fenton reaction (Source: PubChem). This oxidative stress leads to lipid peroxidation, protein damage, and DNA mutations, contributing to various pathologies (Source: StatPearls). In conditions like hereditary hemochromatosis and transfusion-dependent thalassemia, the accumulation of free iron causes systemic organ damage, particularly in the liver, heart, and endocrine glands (Source: NIH).
