FTCD antisense RNA 1 (FTCD-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed from the strand opposite to the FTCD gene locus. It does not encode a protein and is classified as an antisense lncRNA. Antisense lncRNAs are known to regulate gene expression at multiple levels, such as transcriptional interference, RNA sponging (acting through ceRNA mechanisms), chromatin remodeling, or by affecting RNA stability or translation. While many antisense lncRNAs have been described as modulators of disease processes, including cancer and imprinting, no disease-specific function or therapeutic targeting has been specifically demonstrated for FTCD-AS1. Clarifications and context: - FTCD-AS1 is a non-protein-coding, antisense lncRNA corresponding to the FTCD gene locus. - There is no evidence FTCD-AS1 itself is a direct therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs or mechanisms of action directed at it at present. - There is robust literature on the general roles of antisense lncRNAs in gene regulation and disease, but FTCD-AS1 has not yet been specifically characterized in this context in curated databases or published studies as of 2024[1][4]. - FTCD (not FTCD-AS1) has been implicated as a tumor suppressor gene and a therapeutic target in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)[2][5]. However, this does not apply to FTCD-AS1, which is a distinct noncoding transcript.
