Overview
The alpha-gal epitope (Galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose) is a carbohydrate structure found on glycoproteins and glycolipids of non-primate mammals and some other organisms. Humans naturally produce anti-alpha-gal antibodies. In certain individuals, tick bites or specific environmental factors can lead to the production of anti-alpha-gal IgE, underlying alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy where exposure to mammalian products containing alpha-gal triggers delayed allergic reactions. Anti-alpha-gal antibodies are also implicated in hyperacute rejection during xenotransplantation.
