Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) release in the striatum is a critical inhibitory process primarily mediated by medium spiny neurons (MSNs). GABA acts as the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS, and its release in the striatum is essential for regulating neuronal excitability and maintaining a balance between excitation and inhibition.
