Overview

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) release in the striatum is a critical inhibitory process primarily mediated by medium spiny neurons (MSNs). GABA acts as the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS, and its release in the striatum is essential for regulating neuronal excitability and maintaining a balance between excitation and inhibition. This process involves vesicular exocytosis triggered by calcium influx at presynaptic terminals of MSNs. The resulting GABA release activates GABAA and GABAB receptors on postsynaptic neurons, leading to inhibitory effects. Dysregulation of striatal GABA release is implicated in the pathophysiology of neurological disorders like Huntington’s and Parkinson’s disease, highlighting its importance in motor control and basal ganglia function.
