Gastric Mucosa (Cytoprotective)

Molecular classification
Epithelial tissue, Biological System
01

Overview

The gastric mucosa is the innermost lining of the stomach, responsible for protecting underlying tissues from harsh gastric contents. Cytoprotection refers to mechanisms and agents that protect the gastric mucosa from injury by means other than simply reducing or neutralizing stomach acid. This involves mucus/bicarbonate secretion, increased blood flow, and tissue repair.

Mechanism of action

Enhances mucus and bicarbonate secretion, increases gastric mucosal blood flow, forms a protective barrier, promotes tissue repair, and scavenges free radicals. It does NOT act by reducing or neutralizing stomach acid.
