Overview

Gastrointestinal foam refers to the presence of gas bubbles within the digestive tract, often observed as foamy or frothy stool. These gas bubbles are collections of gases—primarily carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sometimes methane—trapped in mucus or liquid within the gastrointestinal lumen. The formation of such foam is typically a result of either increased gas production or impaired absorption/elimination. It is often an indicator of underlying disturbances such as malabsorption syndromes, infections, pancreatic insufficiency, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or dietary factors. Simethicone can provide symptomatic relief.
