Gastrokine 3, pseudogene (GKN3P)

Target
GKN3P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Other (not a protein, enzyme, receptor, transporter, etc.)
01

Overview

Gastrokine 3, pseudogene (GKN3P) is part of the gastrokine family, which in other mammals includes proteins (such as GKN1, GKN2, and GKN3) involved in gastric mucosal health and defense. In humans, the GKN3 locus contains a premature stop codon and splice site mutations, rendering it an inactive pseudogene with no verified protein product or function. Unlike functional gastrokines, GKN3P is not expressed or detectable at the protein level in human tissues and is not implicated as a molecular target in disease or therapy. However, its mouse and pig orthologs are functional and may play roles in stomach cell maintenance and metaplasia, hinting at evolutionary changes uniquely affecting the human lineage.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable.

03

Biological functions

None definitively confirmed in humans. In other species (e.g., mouse), GKN3 is involved in gastric mucosal maintenance and is expressed in stomach mucous neck cells. In humans, pseudogenes can sometimes regulate related genes via competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) effects or by acting as miRNA sponges, but this has not been established for GKN3P specifically.
04

Disease associations

No confirmed direct role.In mouse and other mammals, GKN3 may be linked to gastric homeostasis and gastric diseases.Human GKN3P lacks coding activity and is not directly implicated in specific diseases.
