The GluN2B subunit-containing N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA receptor) is a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors in the central nervous system. It is a heterotetrameric complex composed of two GluN1 subunits and two GluN2B subunits, encoded by the GRIN2B gene. These receptors function as ligand-gated ion channels, mediating Ca2+, Na+ influx and K+ efflux upon glutamate binding. The GluN2B subunit confers high affinity for CaMKII, which is crucial for long-term potentiation (LTP). Dysregulation has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases due to its role in excitotoxicity, and alterations in GRIN2B are linked to various neurological disorders.
