Overview

Glutamate receptor ionotropic kainate 5 (GluR5) is a subunit of the kainate class of ionotropic glutamate receptors. These receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system by responding to the neurotransmitter glutamate. GluR5 plays a critical role in normal synaptic function and plasticity. RNA editing and alternative splicing generate different isoforms with varying Ca2+ permeability and sensitivity to inhibition. It interacts with intracellular proteins like DLG4, PICK1, and SDCBP, influencing receptor localization and function. Kainate receptors contribute to fast excitatory transmission and modulate neuronal network activity, potentially implicating them in neurological disorders when dysregulated.
