Overview

Glutamate receptor ionotropic, NMDA 2A (GluN2A) is a subunit of the NMDA receptor, a glutamate-gated ion channel crucial for excitatory neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, learning, memory, and brain development. NMDA receptors are heterotetrameric complexes, typically with two GluN1 and two GluN2 subunits. GluN2A-containing receptors contribute to long-term potentiation and synaptic plasticity. Mutations in GRIN2A, the gene encoding GluN2A, can cause epilepsy and other neurological disorders due to altered NMDA receptor function and neuronal excitability.
