Overview

The glutamate receptor ionotropic, NMDA 2B subunit (GluN2B), encoded by the GRIN2B gene, is a critical component of the NMDA receptor complex. It functions as a ligand-gated cation channel with high calcium permeability. GluN2B-containing NMDA receptors are especially important during early brain development and play essential roles in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Mutations in GRIN2B are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. GluN2B also acts as a mediator for stroke damage, making it a therapeutic target for drug discovery efforts.
