The NMDA receptor is a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors that functions as a ligand-gated ion channel. It plays a central role in excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system (CNS), mediating synaptic plasticity, neuronal development, and memory formation. The receptor is permeable to calcium (Ca²⁺), sodium (Na⁺), and potassium (K⁺) ions. It requires co-binding of both glutamate and glycine for activation and is voltage-dependent due to Mg²⁺ block at resting membrane potentials.
