Overview

Glutathione S-transferase alpha 12, pseudogene (GSTA12P) is a non-functional pseudogene belonging to the glutathione S-transferase (GST) alpha family cluster on chromosome 6p12.2. Unlike functional members of the GST family, which catalyze the conjugation of glutathione to a wide variety of substrates as part of detoxification and xenobiotic metabolism, GSTA12P does not produce a functional enzyme and has no enzymatic or receptor activity. As a pseudogene, it is not involved in therapeutic targeting and has no established biological or pathological function. GSTA12P is listed as a pseudogene in official genomic and gene annotation databases, and not among the 16 functional GST genes recognized in humans. Pseudogenes in the GST alpha cluster are remnants of gene duplication and mutation events; several such pseudogenes flank or intersperse the functional GST alpha family genes, but do not encode active enzymes. Since GSTA12P does not encode a protein, it is not a valid therapeutic target, nor does it have biomarkers, disease associations, or known safety concerns. The presence of "pseudogene" in the name and all supporting genetic and biochemical analyses indicate this entry is not a current or potential therapeutic target and should not be considered an active molecular entity for pharmacological or diagnostic purposes.
