Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), glycosomal form, is an enzyme that catalyzes the sixth step of glycolysis: the conversion of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (GAP) to 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate. In trypanosomatid parasites, this enzyme is localized within specialized organelles called glycosomes. Glycosomal GAPDH is essential for ATP production in bloodstream-form trypanosomes and is a potential drug target for diseases like African sleeping sickness and Chagas disease due to differences between parasite and host enzymes.
