Overview

Glycine dehydrogenase (decarboxylase) pseudogene 1 (GLDCP1) is a nonfunctional segment of DNA that closely resembles the sequence of the functional glycine decarboxylase gene, but does not encode an active enzyme or protein. Pseudogenes such as GLDCP1 are the result of gene duplication or retrotransposition followed by loss-of-function mutations (such as premature stop codons or frameshifts). They are typically not transcribed into a functional protein and have no known direct biological or therapeutic function. While the functional gene (GLDC) is critical for glycine metabolism and mutations in GLDC cause disease (e.g., glycine encephalopathy), a pseudogene such as GLDCP1 does not participate in metabolism or disease causation and is not a viable therapeutic target. Important note: Queries for "glycine decarboxylase" or "glycine cleavage system P-protein" typically refer to the active enzyme encoded by the GLDC gene, not the pseudogene GLDCP1. The pseudogene should not be confused with the functional gene when considering therapeutic relevance.

Mechanism of action

None. No drugs target pseudogenes.

03

Biological functions

None; as a pseudogene, GLDCP1 does not encode a functional protein or participate in biological processes
04

Disease associations

None directly; pseudogenes can sometimes be transcribed, but GLDCP1 is not known to play a direct disease role. Confusion with the functional gene GLDC can implicate genetic disease, but GLDCP1 itself is not causative.
05

Safety considerations

None. As a nonfunctional pseudogene, there are no noted safety concerns or therapeutic challenges.
