Target intelligence / Profile preview
Goldenrod extract is a complex botanical preparation derived from the aerial parts of plants in the Solidago genus, most commonly Solidago virgaurea. It is not a discrete molecular target but rather a multi-component therapeutic mixture containing bioactive secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, triterpene saponins, and phenolic acids (Melzig, 2004). Historically used in traditional medicine, it is primarily recognized for its aquaretic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. In modern phytotherapy, it is frequently employed as an adjuvant treatment for inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract and for the prevention of renal calculi (Thiem & Goślińska, 2004). The extract's efficacy is attributed to its ability to increase urine flow without significant electrolyte loss and to inhibit the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. While generally considered safe, it should be avoided by individuals with known allergies to the Asteraceae family or those with fluid-restrictive conditions like congestive heart failure. As a complex mixture, it does not target a single receptor but modulates various physiological pathways involved in renal excretion and inflammation.
The extract exerts its therapeutic effects through the synergistic action of its constituents: flavonoids (e.g., quercetin, rutin) and saponins inhibit inflammatory mediators such as 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase; phenolic acids provide antioxidant protection; and the complex mixture promotes aquaresis (water diuresis) and smooth muscle relaxation in the urinary tract (Melzig, 2004; EMA, 2008).
