Overview

Goose parvovirus (GPV) is a small, non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the family Parvoviridae and the genus Dependoparvovirus [2, 5]. It is the primary etiological agent of Derzsy's disease, a highly contagious and often fatal infection in young geese and Muscovy ducks, characterized by high mortality, prostration, and severe enteric and systemic lesions [1, 3]. The viral genome encodes structural proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3) that form the icosahedral capsid and non-structural proteins (NS1, NS2) essential for replication and pathogenicity [6, 13]. NS1 is known to induce apoptosis in host cells via the AIF-mitochondrial pathway, while the capsid proteins, particularly VP3, are essential for host cell receptor binding and are the main targets for neutralizing antibodies [10, 11]. Management of GPV relies heavily on the vaccination of breeding flocks to provide passive immunity to offspring and the administration of hyperimmune serum to goslings, as no specific antiviral treatments are currently available [5, 9]. The virus's environmental stability and potential for vertical transmission through eggs pose significant challenges to the waterfowl industry [4, 7].
