Grass pollen allergens from *Lolium perenne* (perennial ryegrass), *Phleum pratense* (timothy grass), and *Poa pratensis* (Kentucky bluegrass) are significant causes of IgE-mediated allergic reactions. These temperate grasses have similar allergenic profiles and contribute to seasonal allergic rhinitis and asthma. Major allergens include Group 1 and Group 5 proteins (e.g., Lol p 1, Lol p 5, Phl p 1, Phl p 5). There is extensive cross-reactivity among temperate grasses. Standardized extracts are used for diagnosis and allergen immunotherapy.
Allergen immunotherapy induces tolerance by modulating the immune response to specific allergens. Antihistamines block histamine receptors, reducing allergy symptoms. Corticosteroids reduce inflammation.
