Guanine nucleotide-binding protein G(T) subunit gamma-T1 (GNGT1) is the gamma subunit of transducin, a heterotrimeric G-protein complex found primarily in vertebrate retinal rod cells. It plays a central role in phototransduction by participating in the G-protein mediated signaling cascade following light activation of rhodopsin. Alongside the beta subunit, it is required for GTPase activity and signal amplification in the rod phototransduction cascade. Mutations in GNGT1 have been associated with conditions such as night blindness and have also been linked to prostate cancer, but it is not considered a direct therapeutic target.
