H2B clustered histone 16, pseudogene (H2BC16P), also referred to by multiple aliases such as pH2B/i, H2BFIP, HIST1H2BPS2, is classified as a *pseudogene* within the H2B histone gene cluster, found on human chromosome 6[4][5]. "Pseudogene" designates a DNA segment similar in sequence to a functional gene but contains mutations or sequence changes preventing it from producing a functional protein; in H2BC16P, there is no evidence of protein-coding potential, no involvement in cellular processes, and no characterized biological activity or role in disease[5]. The "p" suffix in its gene symbol distinguishes it from functional H2B histone proteins, which are key components of nucleosomes involved in DNA packaging, chromosome structure, and cell cycle regulation[3][4][5]. However, unlike functional H2B histone family members, H2BC16P does not produce histone protein, is not incorporated into nucleosomes, and is not considered a relevant target for drug interaction, diagnosis, or therapy.
