Overview

Heat shock transcription factor, Y-linked 2 (HSFY2) encodes a member of the heat shock factor (HSF) family, acting as a transcriptional activator of heat shock proteins. It is found exclusively on the Y chromosome in humans and is present as two identical copies in a palindromic region. Alternative splicing yields multiple isoforms. HSFY2 is frequently deleted in some infertile males, indicating a critical role in spermatogenesis. It functions by binding DNA at specific sites to regulate the expression of genes involved in responding to cellular stress, particularly heat shock proteins. While it is not a drug target in itself, its presence or absence may serve as a biomarker relevant to the genetic diagnosis of male infertility.
