Hemagglutinin Protein (Influenza B-Victoria Lineage)

Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Viral protein, Hemagglutinin
01

Overview

The hemagglutinin (HA) protein is a major surface glycoprotein of the Influenza B virus, specifically from the Victoria lineage. It plays a critical role in viral entry by binding to sialic acid receptors on host cells and mediating membrane fusion. The HA protein is also the primary target for neutralizing antibodies and is central to vaccine design. It forms homotrimers on the virion surface, with each monomer consisting of HA1 (receptor-binding) and HA2 (fusion domain) subunits. Antigenic drift in HA can lead to reduced vaccine effectiveness. The B/Victoria lineage primarily infects children at higher rates compared with Yamagata-lineage viruses.
